We kicked off summer with a long awaited trip to Michigan. Tim Allen has been tempting me with those Pure Michigan ads for many years and we finally got to see for ourselves what summertime in Michigan is really all about. In total, we spent nearly four weeks bouncing around Michigan and it was glorious. Our first stop was beach camping in Grand Haven, MI.

Unsalted and Shark-Free!

Grand Haven sits on the west side of the state, right on the shores of Lake Michigan. We camped at Grand Haven State Park, situated between the beach and the Grand Canal. Spots are tight, but hey, you’re steps from the sand!

We loved camping here, even if there are no sewer or water connections. The campground playground was a favorite with our kids and we could watch them from our site.

A walking/biking path runs alongside the Grand Canal and leads you into downtown Grand Haven. We loved being able to ride our bikes to dinner!

If you are going to Grand Haven, you’ve got to stop by Pronto Pups for some hand-dipped corn dogs. It’s the little things in life, right? Like buying fresh corn dogs and eating them on a bench by the canal while you watch boats pass by.

Speaking of the little things, an ice cream shop that pops candy eyes onto your soft serve is a master of delight.

While in Grand Haven, we took the opportunity to check out Holland, MI and had the best time at the Dutch Village! It’s basically a mini theme park all about Holland. We got to learn about how wooden shoes are made, we sat in on a presentation about chocolate and cheese, and we even got to learn a Dutch dance.

We ended our time in Grand Haven in style, by catching a show at the famous musical fountain. Everyone gathers at an outdoor amphitheater and the fountain puts on a show across the canal.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a musical fountain, but we all loved the show and it was the perfect end to our week in Grand Haven.
